Science of a pump

A "pump" is when the muscle you are exercising becomes larger than when it is at rest. This is caused by the body shuttling more blood to the working muscle than normal to help quickly deliver key nutrients and oxygen.

This process can be enhanced with specific ingredients that support nitric oxide (NO) production, alongside being properly hydrated.

As the body delivers these nutrients to the muscle at an increased rate, it allows the muscle to perform better & longer, thus resulting in an improved workout experience.

While the pump has an amazing aesthetic appeal, the enhanced blood flow to the working muscles has downstream benefits in delivering important post-workout nutrients. Always remember to follow up your workouts with a serving of protein!

The Power of High Volume Pump, a Stimulant-Free Pre-Workout Solution

Pre-workout products often contain caffeine, and for good reason – it's one of the best performance-enhancing compounds. However, not everyone wants a caffeine-loaded pre-workout due to sensitivity issues, late-night workout preferences, or other personal reasons.

Understanding this need, PEScience created High Volume Pump, a premium stimulant-free pre-workout that helps you maximize your performance. Discover the ingredients in each serving of High Volume Pump and see how this formula allows you to give your all at the gym without the jitters, or any skin itching or tingling.

High Volume Pump: What's Under the Lid

High Volume contains seven premium ingredients that deliver powerful muscle pumps, enhance performance, and maintain proper hydration and cellular electrolyte balance.

Citrulline

Citrulline is an amino acid found naturally in many fruits and vegetables, especially watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) from which its name is derived.

Citrulline serves as a precursor to another amino acid called arginine, which directly produces nitric oxide — the molecule responsible for vasodilation. Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels, causing them to widen and increase blood flow to working muscles.

Supplementing with citrulline is more effective than taking arginine alone for increasing arginine availability and nitric oxide production. This is because citrulline bypasses liver metabolism, whereas up to 38% of arginine is broken down by the liver before reaching the bloodstream (1).

High Volume includes six grams of citrulline per serving, which matches or exceeds the doses used in clinical trials. These studies have shown that citrulline can improve muscle stamina during high-intensity strength training and enhance muscle recovery (2, 3, 4).

Arginine Nitrate

Arginine nitrate is a compound that contains nitrate bonded to arginine. While arginine directly produces nitric oxide, your body can also make the pump molecule from nitrate through a separate pathway.

Many vegetables, particularly beetroot, spinach, and arugula, are rich in dietary nitrates. Consuming these vegetables has been shown to improve exercise capacity — the maximum amount of physical performance a person can sustain — and speed up muscle recovery (5, 6).

However, the combination of arginine and nitrate makes this ingredient special because it targets two different pathways to increase nitric oxide. This dual approach ensures more stable and long-lasting nitric oxide production.

High Volume delivers two grams of arginine nitrate per serving, with an effective dose of 530 mg of that being nitrate.

Taurine

Taurine is an amino acid present in meats, fish, poultry, and dairy products.

It was first isolated from the bile of an ox, and its name is derived from the Latin term "Bos taurus" which means bull or ox (7).

It acts as an osmolyte to regulate cell volume and maintain cell integrity, supports calcium signaling to promote muscle formation and regeneration, and functions as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damaging free radicals and reactive oxygen species (7).

Because it's highly concentrated in the brain, taurine may also act as a neurotransmitter, affecting cognition, mood, and focus, and improve vascular function by promoting nitric oxide production (8).

Owing to its various functions, supplementing with taurine has been suggested to improve endurance, strength, power, and muscle recovery, while decreasing metabolic markers of stress and muscle damage (9).

Sodium

Sodium is widely seen as unhealthy since it is commonly found in highly processed foods like breads, cold cuts and cured meats, snacks, and frozen meals, and because its excessive intake is linked with poor cardiovascular outcomes.

However, sodium remains an important electrolyte, necessary for maintaining fluid and blood volume and supporting nerve impulse transmission and muscle contractions.

People who consume the standard American or Western diet have no issues consuming enough sodium to support these functions — it's usually the issue of consuming too much.

But because sodium is lost through sweat during exercise, especially when intense and prolonged or in hot climates, athletes can benefit from its supplementation before workouts to support strong muscle contractions, maintain blood flow volume, and prevent muscle cramps (10).

High Volume provides sodium as trisodium citrate — the sodium salt of citric acid — which is about 27% sodium by weight. For comparison, table salt provides about 39% sodium by weight.

Magnesium

Magnesium is another electrolyte. It's responsible for hundreds of enzymatic processes, regulating muscle protein synthesis, energy metabolism, and muscle and nerve function, among other roles (11).

Despite these important roles, it's estimated that over 50% of people don't consume the recommended amounts of magnesium, likely since it's present in foods that most American diets lack like leafy greens, nuts and seeds, and whole grains (12).

To this point, while magnesium is unlikely to improve exercise performance in those with optimal levels, having low levels — which is also common among athletes, likely since it's lost in sweat — can impair exercise performance since the electrolyte plays an important role in energy metabolism (13, 14).

Therefore, supplementing with it can be useful for preventing declines in performance that can result from low magnesium levels as studies point to positive associations between a high magnesium intake and various measures of exercise performance (15).

High Volume provides a highly bioavailable form of magnesium as magnesium glycerophosphate chelate so more magnesium reaches your bloodstream and less is wasted. Its high absorbability also means it won't cause stomach distress, unlike other forms.

Glycerol

Glycerol is the structural backbone of triglycerides — the most common type of fat in the body — but it can also increase osmolality throughout the body's water compartments, enhancing fluid retention with a concomitant reduction in urine output (16).

This results in a state of "hyperhydration," which during exercise, helps maintain hydration, provides thermoregulatory benefits, and may decrease fatigue and increase exercise capacity and power (17).

As an energy substrate, glycerol may also enhance endurance by decreasing the utilization of glycogen — the storage form of glucose.

Volume Pump provides glycerol as HydroMax, which is designed to be more stable and dissolvable in water for easier mixing.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a strong antioxidant that may help reduce the reactive oxygen species produced during exercise (18).

While the production of these compounds can be beneficial for enhancing training adaptation, excessive production may lead to muscle fatigue and damage, particularly if there are insufficient antioxidants around, such as vitamin C, to neutralize them (19).

Vitamin C also helps stabilize and increase levels of a compound that activates the enzymes that produce nitric oxide called tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) (20, 21).

And, through a different nitric oxide producing pathway, vitamin C has been shown to enhance the conversion of nitrite to nitric oxide (22).

Who Can Benefit from High Volume?

High Volume is perfect for anyone seeking a stimulant-free pre-workout that enhances performance without the jitters.

If you're sensitive to caffeine, prefer late-night workouts, or simply want to avoid stimulants, this product is designed for you.

Athletes looking to improve muscle stamina, strength, and recovery will benefit from its carefully selected clinically-dosed premium ingredients, including citrulline, arginine nitrate, taurine, sodium, magnesium, and glycerol.

How to Take High Volume

Each container of High Volume provides 18, two-scoop servings.

Choose from seven delicious flavors, including:

  • Guava Pineapple Punch
  • Black Cherry
  • Sour Peach Candy
  • Melon Berry Twist
  • Sour Green Apple
  • Strawberry Kiwi
  • Raspberry Lemonade

It's recommended to mix 1-2 scoops of High Volume in 8-12 ounces of water 30 minutes before training. If you weigh 160 pounds or less, take one scoop.

Some minor clumping may occur but this is normal — just make sure to use the product within three months for maximum quality.

Although High Volume achieves much of its praise for delivering quality workouts without stimulants, you can stack it with Prolific if desired.

Prolific contains some of the ingredients in High Volume but provides caffeine along with other ingredients intended to forge mind-muscle connections and bolster focus.

In this case, take one scoop of each product.

PEScience's thermogenic, Alphamine, is another product with which you can stack High Volume.
